Safe, Healthy and Environmental Ship Recycling (SHEREC)
SHEREC is a collaborative project includes 16 organizations from all over Europe with the support of the European Union's Horizon Europe program specifically under the Cluster 4: "Digital, Industry and Space". The project aimed at revolutionizing safety and environmental standards in the ship recycling industry. The enhancement of occupational health and safety conditions, along with the prevention of environmental contamination by hazardous materials, are recognized as the central goals of this initiative.
To meet these objectives, the adoption of state-of-the-art robotics, data, and AI technologies is being prioritized, specifically focusing on their integration into the ship recycling sector where they have previously been underutilized. RAT lab is involved in several packages within the SHEREC project, contributing significantly to the overall project objectives. Additionally, the development of a sophisticated aerial indoor drone is being managed by RAT, which will be equipped with advanced visual sensors, chemical sensors, and specialized tools aimed at the detection and precise localization of hazardous materials within ships.
This drone is tasked with creating a comprehensive 3D map of a ship's interior, facilitating the accurate identification and location of hazardous substances. Through these technological innovations, not only is the safety within the industry being enhanced, but the efficiency of the ship recycling process is also being improved, promoting a safer and more environmentally responsible approach.
